63rd PES ANNUAL MEETING 2007

The 63rd Annual Meeting of the Philosophy of Education Society will be held from Friday, March 16 through Monday, March 19, 2007 at the Sheraton Midtown, Atlanta, Georgia. The Program Committee invites papers to be submitted for presentation at the meeting and for subsequent publication in the Society's Yearbook, Philosophy of Education 2007. The Committee also invites two additional types of proposals: 1) proposals for alternative sessions and topical discussions to take place at the meeting, especially as part of an evening embedded conference focused on the philosophical dimensions of educational practice, and 2) proposals for work-in-progress working sessions that will bring two or three participants together with a PES veteran whose expertise matches their interests to provide a collaborative space for developing ideas that are not yet ready for the regular paper submission process.

Papers and proposals accepted will address questions about education that have significant philosophical dimensions, and will be drawn from a diversity of philosophical perspectives and traditions. The Committee will review only submissions made in accordance with the instructions below. See the review sheet. With the exception of the Presidential Address, the Kneller Lecture and other specially designated invited talks, only those papers reviewed and accepted by the Program Committee, and invited responses to them, will be printed in Philosophy of Education 2007.

DEADLINE: Submissions must be filed electronically on the Open Journal System (see below) by 5:00 PM, November 1, 2006.

PAPER SUBMISSIONS: Papers may not exceed 4500 words, including footnotes, and must be written in proper PES form (see the style guide available on the Society's web site). The 4500 word limit will be strictly enforced. Papers which modestly exceed the 4500 word limit will be subject to editing. Papers that exceed this limit excessively will be subject to rejection without review or to not being printed in the Yearbook.

Papers will be reviewed blindly. Criteria for review include quality of argument, links to both philosophical literature and educational practice, quality of expression, and importance of the contribution. Please make sure that the paper, including the notes, contains no references to your name, institutional affiliation, or work (e.g., "as I have argued on many occasions..."). Your identifying information will be entered in the Open Journal System and your proposal matched to that information.

PROPOSAL SUBMISSIONS: Proposals may not exceed 400 words, including references. They take three general forms.

  • ALTERNATIVE SESSIONS may be scheduled concurrently with paper sessions or in evening time slots. Examples include roundtables, poster dialogues, authors' talks, performances, consultations, interviews, and conversations on issues. Criteria for review (LINK) include quality of motivating question or idea, potential interaction with session attendees, and relevance/importance to educational philosophy and educational practice.
  • TOPICAL DISCUSSIONS are scheduled during mealtimes and evenings. Examples include small, informal discussions on selected readings, special interests, and current debates -- especially as related to educational practice. Criteria for review (LINK) include quality of motivating question or idea, potential interaction with session attendees, and relevance/importance to educational philosophy and educational practice.
  • WORKING PAPER SESSIONS group scholars with work-in-progress in an informal, collaborative setting. Sessions will be listed on the program with a tentative meeting time. Proposals should detail the question or claim being investigated, relevant sources/resources, likely direction, and mode(s) of analysis. Criteria for review (LINK) include quality of question/claim, suitability of sources/resources, suitability of mode(s) of analysis, potential for contribution to educational philosophy and educational practice.

OPEN JOURNAL SYSTEM:

To submit a paper or proposal, please register as an author for Philosophy of Education 2007 at http://ojs.ed.uiuc.edu/. (OJS will be available for 2007 submissions September 15, 2006.) The submission process is fairly simple. You will be asked to review a submission checklist and indicate whether your submission is a full paper, an alternative session proposal or a working paper. You will be prompted for "metadata," i.e. contact information. After you have uploaded your proposal -- as an attachment in Word format, an email receipt will be sent confirming submission.

CALL FOR PARTICIPATION AS A RESPONDENT OR CHAIR:

Members of PES who are interested in serving as session chairs or respondents are invited to indicate that interest by email to the Program Chair, Barbara Stengel. Please specify your areas of expertise and provide your full contact information (mailing address, e-mail address, and phone number).

Inquiries should be directed to at barbara.stengel@millersville.edu.
