Call for Dues, Elections, and Conference Registration- Jeffrey MilliganANNUAL MEETING Our 2011 Annual Meeting is just around the corner! We will be at the Ritz-Carlton in St. Louis March 24-28 (See Hospitality Chair Anne Newman's section below for a link to the hotel reservations). Program Chair Rob Kunzman and his team have put together an outstanding program, which you can preview here: 2011 Preliminary Program . And conference registration remains open. Click here to register: CONFERENCE REGISTRATION . Please register as soon as possible as I will need to close registration about a week before the conference. After that you will be welcome to register on site in St. Louis. One new feature of this year's conference is a "Meet Me in St. Louis" welcome reception to be sponsored by the Ritz Carlton Thursday evening. So, come in Thursday if you can, meet old friends and colleagues and join us as we kick off what promises to be a wonderful Annual Meeting. MEMBERSHIP DUES I am sending out notices of lapsed memberships along with the e-mail message you received about the posting of the February 2011 Update. If the e-mail message you received indicates that your membership has expired, please log in to our secure payment system and renew your membership for 2010-2011. So, don't miss out on Ed Theory, the Yearbook, discounted conference registration, and the other benefits of membership in the Philosohy of Education Society. Renew your membership today! The E-Register payment system does have the forgotten password feature, and you can pay with a credit card -Visa or Master Card. Check payments are also available, but use the on-line system nevertheless. If you have forgotten whether you paid or not, log in and check under the Membership tab. You can also take this time to update your address and other information. To log in you simply need to enter your e-mail address and password. If you have trouble logging in it may be because your e-mail address has changed. If that's the case, try using your old e-mail address or, if you don't remember it, let me know and I can change it in our records. Even if you don't remember your password you can enter your e-mail and click on the "forgotten your password?" link. The system will send you (to the e-mail address we have on file!) a temporary password that you can use to log in. Thanks to all of you who renewed your membership recently. (Please note: We've discovered a programming glitch in the dues payment system that seems to affect only new members who are attempting to join and pay dues. If you or a friend or colleague experience difficulty of any kind with the system, please don't hesitate to contact me at jmilligan@fsu.edu and I will be happy to assist. The e-Register folks are working on the problem and assure me they will have it repaired shortly.) BOOK DISPLAY The Library of Social Science is once again organizing our book display. I sent out information a while back on how you can recommend books for the display. To recommend a book for the display, send the title, date of publication, publisher and publisher contact information to Mei Ha Chan at LSSBookExhibits@earthlink.net. You can also call Mei Ha at 1-718-393-1075. Also, Nick Burbules has announced that there will be FREE back issues of the Yearbook and Educational Theory at the book display. This alone is worth the trip! ELECTIONS RESULTS I am pleased to announce that Barbara Applebaum has been elected to the PES Executive Board and, after forgetting two years in a row to get the elections to COPA right, I've finally done it (I think). David Waddington has been elected to complete a term on COPA that should have begun with last year's conference, and Kathleen Knight Abowitz has been elected to a full term on COPA that will begin with this year's conference. Please join me in thanking Barbara, David and Kathleen for their service to the Society and to all those who stood for election. Message from the President - Eamonn CallanThis year’s PES conference promises to be among the very best in the last decade. Rob Kunzman and the program committee have put together an excellent program. We have had a change of plan regarding the Kneller lecture. This year’s lecturer will be Erik Olin Wright, Professor of Sociology at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, and among the most influential social theorists of his time. More information on the conference is available below from Rob and our hospitality chair, Anne Newman. Message from the Program Chair - Rob KunzmanThe 2011 Conference Program is now available, and our gathering promises to be full of compelling ideas and opportunities for growth, not to mention fun with colleagues both new and old. We have 31 thought-provoking papers scheduled throughout the conference, as well as a mix of intriguing alternative sessions, including a General Session that considers “Philosophy of Education Thirty Years after Martin’s Radical Presidential Challenge”—for which Jane Roland Martin herself will serve as discussant. The Kneller Lecture features renowned sociologist Erik Olin Wright, who will draw from Envisioning Real Utopias, his recent magnum opus which has been described as “an innovative theoretical framework for conceptualizing both the goals of progressive change and the strategies for their achievement.” On Sunday, Eamonn Callan will deliver his Presidential Address entitled “Patriotism without Bad Faith.” And lastly, the conference concludes with a General Session by Dan DeNicola, who provides a compelling analysis of the value of liberal education, and questions a critique of liberal education offered by Nel Noddings—who has graciously agreed to respond to Dan’s paper.
Hospitality Committee - Anne NewmanWe are lucky to be meeting this year at the Ritz-Carlton Hotel in St. Louis, which is within walking distance of an array of restaurants, cafes, and shops.
