PES UPDATE JULY 2001

UPDATE OVERVIEW

The July Update brings you a Call for Dues for the just-beginning fiscal and membership year 2001-02, greetings from President Barbara Houston, information from 2002 Program Chair Scott Fletcher regarding next year's conference, action summaries from the Board and Membership Meetings in Chicago, and a series of announcements of potential interest to members.

Also accompanying this Update (and arriving separately if you receive your Update by e-mail) are the Dues Form, a ballot for the Election Committee, the Call for Papers for the Vancouver Conference, and the Copyright Permission Form to be submitted with papers. A business reply envelope has been provided for your convenience. You may use it for dues and/or ballot.

FIRST CALL FOR 2001-02 DUES

Included in this mailing is the dues form for the new year, 2001-02. Please make your check payable to "Philosophy of Education Society" or complete the required credit card information. Return the form to Barb Stengel in the envelope provided. (No postage necessary!)

MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT - Barbara Houston

Greetings . . .

As the summer months roll by think of November 1st, PES paper submission deadline. Think also of ocean bays, ocean parks, redwoods by the ocean; think of April and think of PES in Vancouver. There we have English Bay, Stanley Park, giant West Coast redwoods. PES will be a little later this year to ensure us sun and an option to swim with seals. As well, we are promised cherry trees in full bloom. So save the dates April 19-22 and plan to book early for your room in the splendid Coast Plaza Hotel at Stanley Park. The Canadians have also hospitably arranged a very favorable US dollar exchange rate.

One word on bookings. Please do reserve your rooms at the hotel using the procedure we recommend. We have bargained with the hotel for a good price on rooms but much depends on everyone using this procedure. Otherwise, if sufficient rooms are not booked by members in the regular manner, the society will end up having to pay extra. So, please abide by our new bumper sticker "GOOD CITIZENS RESERVE THROUGH PES."

The program committee eagerly awaits your submissions. Enjoy your summer.

FIRST CALL FOR PAPERS -- Scott Fletcher

Scott Fletcher, Program Committee Chair, reports that planning for the 2002 Conference is well underway as he works with Barbara Houston and the Program Committee to secure a worthy Kneller Lecturer and to construct a program that lives up to the Vancouver conference setting! While the entire Program Committee is not yet settled, we do know that Maureen Ford, Cris Mayo, Bob Floden, Aaron Schutz, and Ken Howe have signed on.

The quality of the program depends on you, of course, and your timely submission of careful, interesting, provocative papers. Please attend to the Call for Papers that accompanies this Update; specifications, dates and contact information are listed. A style sheet for papers can be found on the web at http://cuip.uchicago.edu/pes/stylesheet.htm. All submissions must be accompanied by a Copyright Permission Form. In addition, potential presenters should indicate their A-V needs with their submission. (As is our new practice, the Call for Papers and the Copyright Permission Form are available at the web site www.philosophyofeducation.org.) Deadline for receipt of papers is November 1, 2001. E-mail inquiries can be directed to Scott at scott.fletcher@unh.edu.

EARLY INFORMATION FROM THE HOSPITALITY COMMITTEE - Heesoon Bai

We the Hospitality Committee for PES 2002 would like to extend a cordial invitation to all PES members to attend the Annual Conference in Vancouver April 19th to 22nd, 2002.

Vancouver, British Columbia is a city of gentle rains, beautiful sunshine, mountain landscapes, ocean beaches, and vibrant city life. It is home to a dazzling array of theatres for the performing arts, music festivals, art festivals, galleries, museums, restaurants, taverns, bistros, marinas, sports arenas, fitness centres, forests, parkland, and gardens. From Vancouver, it is only an hour's drive to nearby mountain resorts where you can ski, snowboard or toboggan, and the world-famous ski resorts of Whistler are only 2 1/2 hours away. Vancouver is home to the University of British Columbia, and neighbour to Simon Fraser University on Burnaby Mountain. By late March, Vancouver is in spring bloom -- a wonderful time to experience the temperate rainforest of the Pacific Northwest and the multicultural splendour of the Vancouver cityscape. Sites not to miss include the Van Duesen Gardens, the UBC Botanical and Nitobe Memorial Gardens, the Vancouver Storytelling Festival (held in March), the Vancouver Art Gallery, UBC Museum of Anthropology, Science World, Lynn Canyon, Mount Seymour, Grouse Mountain, Cypress Mountain, Stanley Park and the Vancouver Aquarium, Canada Place, and Granville Island, Canada's only urban national park.

For those of you who attended PES in 1997, you'll remember that it was held at the Coast Plaza Hotel, the same site we've booked for PES 2002. The Coast Plaza is in the heart of Vancouver's west end -- considered by some to be the heart of Vancouver itself. For nature enthusiasts, this means a 2-block walk from the hotel door to the foot of Davie Street, the beach at English Bay and the sea wall (a 10 km walk, cycle, or skate around Stanley Park). Alternatively, you could just pick up a coffee (or a double decaf nonfat latte if you prefer) at Delaney's, across the street from the hotel, and sit on a log looking out at the water. For those whose tastes run to the more concrete and tangible (and bearing in mind that the Canadian dollar is hovering somewhere around $.65 US!), you won't want to miss the vibrant shopping and dining district along Robson Street, just 3 blocks north of the hotel (toward the mountains).

The following are guest room rates at the Coast Plaza (in Canadian $)
Standard Guest Room $129.00 (single) $129.00 (double)
One Bedroom Suite $149.00 (single) $149.00 (double)
Two Bedroom Suite $209.00 (single) $209.00 (double)

You can make reservations at any time:
The Coast Plaza Suite Hotel at Stanley Park
1763 Comox Street
Vancouver, B. C., V6G 1P6, Canada
Tel: (604) 688-7711
Fax: (604) 685-7210

Be sure to note that you are part of the PES party.

See you all in Vancouver next year!
Heesoon Bai, Pamela Courtenay-Hall, Ann Chinnery, and Jerry Coombs

A WARM WELCOME TO NEW MEMBERS

We continue to have new members join PES even as we lose folks from year to year. Fifty-eight new members became part of the Society in 2000-01. A full listing of their names can be found on our website (http://www.philosophyofeducation.org). Total paid membership in the Society for 2000-01 is 399, down slightly from last year. Our goal of course is to add new members each year while retaining past members. Please do your part to insure healthy membership figures by encouraging interested persons to join.

FELLOWS - ANACHRONISM OR VITAL COMPONENT?

Members may not realize that the PES Constitution provides that all officers be dues paying Fellows of the organization. While anyone may join PES by paying dues, Fellow status ("one whose manifest interest and scholarly contribution is in the philosophy of education") is achieved by submitting an application with two Fellows' endorsements to the Board for approval at the spring meeting. Recent discussion has raised the question of the value of Fellow status to and within the organization. Some argue that it is an anachronism, unnecessary and perhaps not egalitarian. Others suggest that there are traditional, political and pragmatic reasons for retaining this membership classification. What do you think? The Board is encouraging open membership discussion on this issue before seriously considering action. (To eliminate Fellow status would require a Constitutional amendment, not impossible certainly, but not a simple task either.)

Please join the discussion on the web site: www.philosophyofeducation.org. Click on the Discussion Forum and let your voice be heard!

ELECTION RESULTS

As those attending the Chicago Conference know, Sophie Haroutunian-Gordon has been named President Elect. Suzanne Rice was elected to the Executive Board and Dilafruz Williams was elected to COPA. Congratulations to all and thanks for their willingness to serve! Thanks too to those who are rotating out of these responsibilities: Past Past-President Jim Garrison, retiring Board member Frank Margonis, and COPA representative Ken Howe. Recognition is due to Clive Beck and the Election Committee (Kal Alston, Deanne Bogdan, Megan Boler, Eric Bredo, Jana Noel, and Emily Roberston) for a job well done.

MEETING MINUTES - ACTION SUMMARY

Minutes for Board and Membership/Business meetings conducted at the annual Conference can be viewed on the Society's web site (http://www.philosophyofeducation.org). Corrections and comments may be forwarded to Barb Stengel (barbara.stengel@millersville.edu). Especially entertaining and informative year after year are the Resolutions, this year orchestrated by Eric Bredo. The following actions were taken:

At the Membership Meeting:

  • Siegel moved that the Executive Board charge COPA to supervise the mobilization of the membership in the effort to bring to the public serious philosophical consideration of standardized testing in the public schools. Haroutunian-Gordon seconded. Houston called the question. Motion passed.
At the Board Meeting:
  • It was moved (Thompson) and seconded (Houston) that the Executive Board empower the Executive Secretary to solicit, by survey, information regarding members' status and income during conference registration. The motion passed.

  •
  • .It was moved (Thompson) and seconded (Margonis) that the Executive Board designate a Kneller Lecture budget figure at the March board meeting for the next year's Lecture activities. That figure is the prerogative of the Board but the following guidelines should be considered: The figure should be based on the prior calendar year's increase in endowment value and should be equal to 50% of that value increase, with an upper limit of $4000. No matter what the Endowment performance, the budget figure should be set at at least $2500. The motion passed.

  •
  • .It was moved (Houston) and seconded (Garrison) that the President, Hospitality Chair and Executive Secretary prepare a Conference Budget by the beginning of the fiscal year that incorporates a) expected institutional contributions, b) expected Kneller funds available, c) anticipated registration revenues and meal fees, based on past experience with the site, and d) actual cost projections from the hotel. This budget should specify a registration fee and meal fees that will allow PES to anticipate breaking even for the conference. The motion passed.

  •
  • .It was moved (Tozer) and seconded (Burbules) that the graduate student room rate be raised from $10 per night to $25 per night. The motion passed. [This action was later reconsidered and amended to $20 on a Houston/Margonis motion. See below.]

  •
  • .Houston moved that the earlier decision be rescinded and that the graduate student room rate be raised to $20 per nite. Thompson seconded. The motion passed.

  •
  • .Thompson moved/Burbules seconded that we make it a policy that Election Committee members are not eligible for nomination. The motion passed.

If you check in now, you can view pictures of the 2001 Conference, courtesy of web builder Craig Cunningham. Craig has also created a space for posting job openings. Forward job announcements to Craig at cac@cuip.net, to Jobs for Philosophers Chair Barbara Thayer-Bacon at bthayer@utk.edu, or to Barb Stengel at help@philosophyofeducation.org.

We plan to have web service for membership renewal and dues payment in place by September 1st. Once that service is in place, we'll send an email message to all our on-line members. If there are other services you desire, please let us know. There are very few things we won't at least consider!

KEEPING TRACK OF EACH OTHER

A number of veteran PES members have changed positions/locations in the past year and graduate student members were successful in claiming academic positions for the first time. While it is impossible for us to reprint all the comings and goings with contact information in this space, we would like to assist members in keeping track of each other. If you are changing positions and would like to notify colleague friends of this fact, send an e-mail with new affiliation to help@philosophyofeducation.org. (Don't forget to include full contact info so we can make the change in PES files). We will list changes received and direct members to the website for contact information.

Here are several moves that have come to our attention:

Rosa Bruno-Jofre from University of Manitoba to Dean of Education, Queen's University
Douglas McKnight from Western Missouri State College to University of Alabama
David Hansen from University of Illinois, Chicago to Teacher's College, Columbia University
Cris Mayo from UNC, Greensboro to University of Delaware

Best wishes to all in their new positions.

EXECUTIVE SECRETARY'S NOTES - Barb Stengel

The Conference in Chicago was very well attended (200+) and very well run. Program Committee Chair Suzanne Rice deserves points for grace as well as for good judgment and planning. Hospitality Chairs David Hansen and Steve Tozer offered charm and attention to critical issues. Diane (Beckett) and Diana (Dummitt) - both the kind of folks who need no last name or extended introduction - handled details, money and recalcitrant registrants with equal aplomb. I spent my time enjoying great sessions, connecting with old and new friends, eating free food, and hoarding drink tickets. I also spent several lovely hours in the hotel tavern on Sunday night . . . which brings me to subject of this message. (Actually, the only action agenda item at that gathering was the development of a new SIG "Women with Sticks." I'll explain later.) Usually I write something exhorting you to pay your dues, or describing what a privilege it is to be the Executive Secretary, or asking you to recruit new members. Well, I've decided those things go without saying and pale in comparison with the real news I am breaking in this space.

President Barbara Houston, though she did not spill the beans, has empowered a small, as-yet-unnamed group to prepare entertainment for the Presidential Luncheon in Vancouver. I am not at liberty to say who is involved ("Babe" who??), so let your imaginations run wild!!! If you have a burning desire to be involved in such a debacle (or will it be a travesty, Denis Phillips fans??), let me know privately. In the meantime, in the spirit of high-stakes accountability, and in an effort to warn you about what might be coming your way, I offer the following standardized test for your edification.

    1.  Which PES member published - at the age of ten!!! - "Thoroughbreds Never Cry" in Horse of Course?

                a.  David Hansen
                b. Luise Prior McCarty
                c. Megan Boler
                d. Hunter McEwan

    2.  Which PES member sang "My Girl" over the telephone to his/her 11 year old girlfriend?

                    a. Cris Mayo
                    b. Chris Higgins
                    c. Gary Fenstermacher
                    d. Harvey Siegel

          3. Which PES member is an accomplished accordianist, winning 3rd prize in a NY State Accordian Competition?

                    a. Barbara Thayer-Bacon
                    b. Barbara Kinach
                    c. Barbara Stengel
                    d. Barbara Houston

        4. Which PES member from Holland can't skate and can't swim?

                    a. Gert Biesta
                    b. Jim Garrison
                    c. John Covaleskie
                    d. Lanny Beyer

        5. Which PES member played in a rock band called The Cretins (I kid you not!!)?

                    a. Dwight Boyd
                    b. Nel Noddings
                    c. Bill Fridley
                    d. Jim Giarelli

        6. Which two PES members both competed in square dancing at the NY State Fair as part of 4-H activities?

                    a. Ames Brown and Wendy Kohli
                    b. Eric Bredo and Barbara Applebaum
                    c. Sophie Haroutunian-Gordon and Walter Feinberg
                    d. Kathy Hytten and Rob Reich

You will be penalized for wrong answers, so please answer only those questions you are sure about. Forward your answer sheet to barbara.stengel@millersville.edu. Those who score in the uppermost stanine get an overnight stay with the philosopher of your choice in Suzanne de Castell's tree house!!!!

[For those of you who think you are safe because I didn't include your secrets in this test, don't rest too easily. I have two more Updates left in my term. . . ]

Happy summer!
