UPDATE OVERVIEW

Look below for the 1999-2000 Call for Dues, a message from President Jim Garrison, an invitation from Program Chair Lynda Stone to respond to the Call for Papers, a Toronto "teaser" from Conference site Coordinator Margaret Brockett, and Action Summaries from the Board and Business Meetings in New Orleans.

Also included in this mailing with the Update are a Dues Form, a ballot for the Election Committee, the Call for Papers for the Toronto Conference, and the Copyright Permission Form to be submitted with papers. There is also a Membership Invitation, which you should share with potential new members..

FIRST CALL FOR 1999-2000 DUES

Included in this mailing is the dues form for 1999-00. Please make checks payable to "Philosophy of Education Society"and return them to Barb Stengel at the address shown on the form. (You may also return dues and ballot in the envelope provided for your Election Committee ballot. See below.) Dues may now be paid by credit card, with a $5.00 transaction fee to underwrite the Society's costs for the credit card system.

N.B. The Executive Board has delayed implementation of the $25 charge to receive the Yearbook in order to study the ramifications of this policy on Yearbook circulation and to consider alternative policies for improving the Society's financial position. Therefore, the dues form is unchanged. Watch for further information on this policy in the October Update.

Note also that the dues form allows you to express your preference regarding the receipt of the Update via e-mail. Only the Update itself will be forwarded electronically. Dues notices, calls for papers, and ballots will still arrive by regular mail. Even a small decrease in the number of pages copied and mailed will save the Society significantly so please use the electronic option if that is feasible for you.

MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT Jim Garrison

The society appears in good condition. The society is becoming increasingly hospitable and diverse, and when it falls short of its ideals more and more people seem comfortable in saying so. It was pleasing to note many unfamiliar faces at our last meeting. I tried to introduce myself to as many of them as possible and was happy to note that many others did so as well. Our only serious Y2K problem is finances. The Executive Committee is busy reconsidering the Yearbook policy voted on at the last meeting. The society has been operating at a loss for some time. We are not in a dire condition, but something must be done soon.

Our conference on-site coordinators, Margaret Brockett and past-president Dwight Boyd, both of the Ontario Institute for the Study of Education at the University of Toronto. have done a wonderful job preparing our way for PES 2000. You may recall they were already distributing brochures for the lovely city of Toronto and the Metropolitan Hotel at our annual meeting in New Orleans. Our Program Chair, Lynda Stone, assures me she is planning an intricate and diverse program. Lynda seeks to offer hospitality to the widest possible range of ideas and opinions, and remains open to suggestions. Like Margaret and Dwight, Lynda has been a delight to work with. Toronto is an exciting city and a most fitting place to be as we celebrate philosophy of education in the new millennium. Please plan to be there and make reservations early.

If any member has anything for the good of the Society they would like to call to the attention of the Executive Committee or me, please do not hesitate to do so.

PES 2000: Toronto, Canada - March 31 to April 3 Margaret Brockett

When you read the Call for Papers for PES 2000, keep in mind that this will be your opportunity to visit Toronto. The Conference will be held in the Metropolitan Hotel, close to the Metro Toronto City Hall and within easy reach of the Theatre District, Chinatown and the University of Toronto. The Hemispheres Restaurant at the hotel boasts five star Cantonese cuisine and is considered one of the finest eating establishments in the city. At the beginning of April, we can be reasonably sure that there will be no more snow and you may even experience a little of spring. You can reserve your room by calling toll free 1-800-668-6600. Pre-arranged rates for the conference are $168 Cdn, single or double -- about US $110!

FIRST CALL FOR PAPERS

Program planning is underway for the 2000 Conference. Lynda Stone is Program Chair, assisted by an outstanding Program Committee. Members are Sophie Haroutunian-Gordon and Kathy Hytten who will coordinate alternative sessions, as well as Gert Biesta, Eric Bredo, David Carr, Denise Egea-Kuehne, James Giarelli, Cris Mayo, Nel Noddings, Stephen Norris, and A.G. Rud. Also aiding the Committee is Program Assistant, Elizabeth Becker. Every effort has been made to represent the exciting diversity within the society; given the caliber of referees, we can be certain they will help constitute a fine program in Toronto.

Included in the July mailing is the Call for Papers and the Copyright Permission Form. The style sheet will soon be found on the Society's web site at http://www.ed.uiuc.edu/EPS/PES. The deadline for receipt of submissions is November 1, 1999. E-mail inquiries should be directly to lstone@email.unc.edu.

ELECTION OF THE NOMINATING COMMITTEE (Ballot not included on web site)

Please choose seven names from the candidates listed and return your ballot no later than September 15, to Executive Secretary Barb Stengel. An envelope for returning the ballot is enclosed.

SAD NEWS

Word has reached us that Larry Althouse passed away February 18, 1999. We extend the Society's condolences to his wife Linda, family and friends.

NEW FELLOWS, NEW MEMBERS

Three new Fellows were approved at the March Board Meeting. Congratulations to:

Estelle Jorgensen, Indiana University

Wendy Kohli, Louisiana State University

Michael Peters, The University of Auckland

More than 100 new members from a wide array of institutions "found" the Society in 1998-99. In addition, 14 others joined the Society after the March Conference and are members of record for the 1999-00 academic year. A full listing of all new members and their institutional affiliations can be found on the Society's web site. We are especially pleased to welcome international colleagues and colleagues whose primary institutional affiliation is in basic education. Total membership in the Society is currently 485, a figure that continues to inch upward. All members are urged to continue recruitment efforts. An Invitation to Membership form is included in this mailing to assist you..

NOTE TO ALL MEMBERS: If at any time, we list incorrect information for you (or errors/typos appear on your mailing info), please do not suffer in silence. E-mail Barb Stengel (bstengel@marauder.millersv.edu) for a quick correction. Remember as well to let us know if you have a change of address and/or institutional affiliation.

REPORT FROM THE MEMBERSHIP COMMITTEE - Deborah Kerdeman, Chair 1998-99

Changes in the Constitution are causing changes in the responsibilities of the Membership Committee. Rather than review membership applications, the Committee has spent time over the past two years in outreach (recruiting new members) and "in-reach" (insuring that present members/Conference attendees are welcomed and "connected" with the membership). Both efforts have apparently been successful and will be continued. Still the Committee is in the process of reviewing its responsibilities and suggestions can be forwarded to the Committee. (Full report on PES web site.)

PES RESOLUTIONS COMMITTEE 1999- Al Neiman

(Resolutions Committee Members are Al Neiman, Dilafruz Williams, Victor Worsfold)

We, the resolutions committee, resolve to be serendipitous, complimentary, and short.

Whereas we are in a state of nature and thus have some time on our hands, we see no need to multiply the "whereas's" endlessly.

Hence, with Noddlingsly care, but not forgetting Robertsonian reason, we resolve

1) to celebrate the life of our recently departed colleague, Harry Broudy, prolific writer and speaker on a wide range of topics in education. We are grateful for the many contributions he made to this Society and to the scholarship in general education, teacher education, and art education. We honor him as a teacher, a scholar, and a friend.

2) to express our sense of loss at the passing of our colleague, George Kneller, a very long time member and supporter of this Society. A prodigious writer on a wide range of topics in the philosophy of education, Kneller made many contributions to this Society. We are grateful for his financial support including a generous gift at PES's 50th anniversary. We honor him as a teacher, a scholar, and a friend.

3) to express our gratitude for the distinguished service to our Society of Robert Floden, Executive Secretary of PES. Thorough to a T, Bob's communications , like the man himself, have always been succinct and unpretentious.

4) to acknowledge the ability of Diane Beckett to keep our feet on the ground and our toes to the fire. We are thankful we have such a distinguished non-philosopher as caretaker of the feats of registration, and fiscal manager for the journal, Educational Theory.

5) to recognize Diana Dummitt and Ginger Reynolds for exhibiting patience, hard work, and care necessary to effect another outstanding Philosophy of Education Yearbook.

6) to thank the Committees, Representatives, and others who have added so much to luster of the society, for their hard work, their commitment, their attention to detail, and their perseverance. We commend them - one and all- for retaining their sanity over the last year:

7) to thank the hotel Monteleone for its good sense in being located in the French Quarter, and to the management and workers for making our stay bright, comfortable, and pleasant.

8) and finally, but equally important, to honor our President Emily Robertson for being a rationally reflective and effective scholar and leader. With mathematical precision, and love and logic, she has led us splendidly. We hope she will discover that there's life after presidenting PES and beyond "sardine can openers". We welcome her to the ranks of distinguished elder statespersons of our Society as she rides into the sunset of distinction.

EXECUTIVE SECRETARY'S NOTES Barb Stengel

Greetings to all as I ease into the role of Executive Secretary and thanks to Bob Floden, Jennifer Rosenberger at Michigan State, Diane Beckett at Educational Theory and others who have gone out of their way to make the transition a smooth one.

This Update is coming to you in a variable format. Those members for whom we have e-mail access are receiving the Update electronically and receiving critical elements of the mailing (Dues Notice, Ballot, Call for Papers) via the usual route. Those members for whom we have no e-mail address are receiving a paper copy of the Update as well as the other items. If you are willing to receive your Update electronically but are on the paper-copy list, please contact me at bstengel@marauder.millersv.edu or call (717) 872-3785 and let me know. If you are on the e-mail list, but prefer the paper copy, let me know that as well.

Note too that the Update includes an Action Summary of the minutes of the three March meetings two board meetings and one membership meeting. The full text of the minutes of these meetings will be available on the Society's web site courtesy of our WebBuilder, Craig Cunningham.

As we move to electronic communication, we will post additional materials on the web site. The conference details, call for papers, style sheet, copyright permission forms, dues forms, Fellow nomination forms, officers' list and contact information, etc. will all be available on the web at http://www.ed.uiuc.edu/EPS/PES . Thanks to Craig whose job is expanding as we attempt to enhance our communication, make information readily available to all interested parties as well as members, and conserve resources.

The change in Update distribution will, we anticipate, result in lower postage costs and some paper conservation as well. If you are experiencing difficulty of any kind with this change in procedure, please let me know and I will do all I can to accommodate you.

I accepted the position of Executive Secretary largely because I anticipated that it would allow me to get to know and work with many of you as we pursue our multiple interests in the philosophy of education. The Society's annual conference is our best opportunity to do that. Toronto is calling us! Make your plans now to submit a paper, propose an alternate session, volunteer as chair or respondent, or just join in the thought-provoking festivities . . . and then please make it a point to introduce yourself to me at the meeting. It will make it easier for me to serve the membership if I can put faces to the many names on dues forms and correspondence.
