Criteria: originality; quality of the argument or inquiry; scholarly significance; potential for development into a larger paper. NB. Since some of the nominees for the PES Outstanding Paper Award also may be papers that will be presented in a General Session, it is important to keep in mind that, for the PES Outstanding Paper Award, it is the quality of the paper as a written text that matters, not its potential to be an engaging conference session.
Eligibility: All full papers submitted to the annual conference are eligible for consideration. Graduate students can be nominated for both the PES Outstanding Paper Award and the PES Legacy Award, but cannot win both awards. If a graduate student wins the Outstanding Paper Award, they cannot also win the Legacy Award.
Nature of the award: The award comes with a $250 cash prize and an award certificate. The award recipient will also be listed on the Awards section of the PES website.
Publication of Outstanding Papers: The paper that receives the PES Outstanding Paper Award is published in Philosophy of Education. Additionally, the author will be given the opportunity, and will be encouraged, to expand the paper and have this expanded version published in Educational Theory (subject to review).
Nomination Process and Award Committee: The PES Program Chair nominates four (4) papers for the PES Outstanding Paper Award but does not participate in the award review itself. The PES Outstanding Paper Award Committee will comprise the Editor and one of the Associate Editors of Educational Theory (with the latter to be invited by the Editor), and one member of that year’s PES program committee, invited by the PES Program Chair.
Conflicts of Interest: The PES Program Chair and members of the award committee are not eligible for nomination. Prior to reviewing the papers, members of the PES Outstanding Paper Award Committee will review the author names of the shortlisted papers. If they have a conflict of interest, they will recuse themselves from the committee. A member has a conflict of interest if they:
